The Eight Core Competencies of Outdoor Leadership

In the following pages I will outline my experience with and thoughts about the eight core competencies as defined by Martin, Cashel, Wagstaff, and Breunig (2006) in their book Outdoor Leadership: Theory and Practice. As of now I believe I have a fairly well-balanced grasp on each of the core competencies at my level and I hope to increase my abilities evenly within each area to become a proficient and respected outdoor leader. The eight core competencies are listed as follows:

  1. Fundamental Knowledge
  2. Self-awareness and Professional Conduct
  3. Decision Making and Judgment
  4. Teaching and Facilitation
  5. Environmental Stewardship
  6. Program Management
  7. Safety and Risk Management
  8. Technical Expertise
