Jim Shirey is a retired Ohio University math professor living peacefully off a back road in Athens, Ohio. With his two sons grown and out of the house, his closest companion (next to his wife) is his dog, Sammy, who may be found trotting alongside him at any point in time. Shirey spends much of his time wandering around his and neighboring properties finding extraordinary natural things to photograph.
Butt Crack and Sammy
It is not entirely uncommon for Shirey to become so engaged in his photography that his pants fall just short of his waistline while Sammy the dog lounges in the grass.
Shirey's set up for his macro photography is highly intentional; the flower must remain completely still as he takes a series of photographs that he will later compile into one stunning image.
This is the final image that Shirey extrapolated from the set-up shown in the previous image.
Shirey frames a bottle gentian found near his home in Athens, Ohio. He was particularly excited to find this flower, explaining that it never opens.
A Long Day's Photography
Shirey makes some final touches to his photographs from the day while Sammy sleeps in the foreground and one of Shirey's older images of Fox Lake is displayed on the wall.

Digging and Sniffing
While Sammy sniffs around for anything interesting, Shirey reburies his recently repaired waterline.
